Fuji is a genre of Nigerian music that really exploded there in the 80s. It emerged as a commercial version of music used to wake up Yoruba Muslims during the fasting of Ramadan. (If you get up before the sun rises, you can eat something.)

The first song I ever heard in this genre was "Fuji Garbage," which is great and has some amazing lap steel playing—something the highlife bands and jùjú musicians like King Sunny Adé have too. Very cool and incredibly fast!

The songs are LONG—as long as 28 minutes—and have great topical titles: "Current Affairs," "Psychology," "Democracy," "Family Planning," "Questionnaire." I'm jealous of these song titles. Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister, considered the creator of Fuji music, gave the genre its name after seeing a travel poster for Japan featuring Mount Fuji—which he deemed the pinnacle, the top, the highest.

Enjoy
