We listen to music in a different way than we listen (or don’t) to someone speaking.
Music, in my opinion, is hard to ignore. That’s probably why philosophers like Plato and religious communities are suspicious of its power.
We listen with our bodies, not just our ears. Even music that isn’t built on a rhythm or a groove connects to our bodies.
We listen with many parts of our brains at the same time. Much of its impact bypasses the rational part of our brains and yet we intuitively perceive the patterns and structure.
Music is social. Dancing and moving together to music is ecstatic, and it ties us to other people.
Music has no moral compass- it brings us together but doesn’t care what for.
We listen to music as a metaphor- for love, for our lives, for how we can be socially.
