We’ve gotten a burst of newsletter signups recently. For the new folks who signed up, every month I drop a new playlist with a theme. Sometimes it’s a collection of current popular songs I like, sometimes music from a country in Africa. Some months the playlist will be familiar, sometimes a bit more out there. These playlists can be listened to on the major streaming services as well as on the player that’s embedded on davidbyrne.com.
This month's theme is Mississippi. Not the state, though that too… but more the giant river and its watershed. There’s a reason for this theme. Reasons to be Cheerful, the solutions journalism online magazine, is exploring the vast Mississippi River Basin, home to some of the most pressing challenges in the United States. A symbol of America, the Mississippi River Basin connects a vast region of farms, cities, dams and natural habitats that support a range of biodiversity across hundreds of thousands of square miles. It is one of America's greatest resources, providing energy generation, agricultural sustenance and transportation. These aspects make the river and the region a fascinating lens through which to view the country's most pressing ecological, economic and cultural challenges -- and their solutions.
More Info Here at Reasons To Be Cheerful
The river is not just in the South, it extends up to Minnesota and Wisconsin too, where the management of a river as significant as this one is getting a re-think.

Also, here is a link to a great Blues festival- that features both music and film!
