David Byrne, "Barely Surviving"
Guardian Op Ed on streaming music

"Without new artists coming up, our future as a musical culture looks grim. A culture of blockbusters is sad, and ultimately it's bad for business. That's not the world that inspired me when I was younger. Many a fan (myself included) has said that "music saved my life", so there must be some incentive to keep that lifesaver available for future generations."

David Byrne on NYC for Creative Time Reports' Summit Series
"It’s still the most stimulating and exciting place in the world to live and work, but it’s in danger of walking away from its greatest strengths."

Peter Halley, Indexed, 2007

Also featured on The Guardian!
And picked up by the following: The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times,
The Rolling Stone, NME, The New York Observer, Hit and Run,

Available on single disc CD plus digi-pack double CD which also features the ‘Scratch My Back’ album

"Rather than make a traditional covers record, I thought it would be much more fun to create a new type of project in which artists communicated with each other and swapped a song for a song, i.e. you do one of mine and I’ll do one of yours, hence the title - Scratch My Back - And I’ll Scratch Yours.” Peter Gabriel

London's tempo is 122.86 beats per minute.
Podcast produced for A Room for London

I brought along some field recording gear to use while I was staying in the lovely pod/room/boat. I went out during the day and recorded sounds that I thought might be useful and evocative. It turned out that most of the sounds—even the church organ in Southwark Cathedral—seemed to converge around a common rhythm. It's a bit too good to be true—that every large city should have it's own rhythm, but here it is. I let the sounds dictate the groove, the tempo, and then I simply played along.

The videos are from all over. I took lots of photos around town while walking about, but I felt that moving images complemented London's groove a little better.

Song and Circumstance
The Work of David Byrne from Talking Heads to the Present

Song and Circumstance
By Sytze Steenstra | Continuum, 2010

"Dutch philosopher Sytze Steenstra, who wrote his doctorate about Byrne, has delivered a superbly wide-ranging, detailed and insightful analysis of the rock star, filmmaker, artist, and design collaborator’s multifaceted oeuvre. A discussion of Byrne’s book The New Sins, for instance, takes us to the German Romantics, Novalis, and Nietzsche. You emerge thinking that this much-celebrated pop-avant-gardist and bicycling cultural omnivore might even be a tad underrated." —Design Observer

Creative Time presents Playing the Building, a sound installation in which the infrastructure, the physical plant of the building, is converted into a giant musical instrument. Devices are attached to the building structure — to the metal beams and pillars, the heating pipes, the water pipes — and are used to make these things produce sound. The activations are of three types: wind, vibration, striking. The devices do not produce sound themselves, but they cause the building elements to vibrate, resonate and oscillate so that the building itself becomes a very large musical instrument.

Straight from the sketchbook, smudges and all, plus a four-foot foldout guide. It’s an eclectic blend of faux science, automatic writing, satire, and an attempt to find connections where none were thought to exist—a sort of self-therapy, allowing the hand to say what the voice cannot. Irrational logic, it’s sometimes called. The application of logical scientific rigor and form to basically irrational premises. To proceed, carefully and deliberately, from nonsense, with a straight face, often arriving at a new kind of sense. The world keeps opening up, unfolding, and just when we expect it to be closed—to be a sealed, sensible box—it shows us something completely surprising.

In keeping with the New Orleans theme for this show I am reuniting with Les Misérables Brass Band. They are a local group that I collaborated with on the live performances of a theater piece I did in the in the mid 80s with Robert Wilson called The Knee Plays. Musically the inspiration came from New Orleans brass bands, like Dirty Dozen and Rebirth, but I somehow mysteriously managed to stiffen it up and skew the music towards my own jerky style. We’ll do the piece "In The Future". —DB
